How does calculating carbon emissions work?

The Footprint Intelligence platform is built based on the comprehensive and widely accepted method for calculating carbon emissions, ensuring accuracy and reliability - the GHG Protocol.

The process is based on two key components:

Activity Data x Emission Factors

Activity Data:

This refers to the various types of data related to your company's activities that contribute to carbon emissions. We understand that different companies have access to different types of data. Hence, the Footprint Intelligence Platform is designed to work flexibly with whichever data type is available to you. It can for example include:

  • Physical Data, e.g., fuel and energy consumption or travel distances.
  • Spend-Based Data, e.g., your company's expenses in certain categories.
  • Estimation-Based for example, e.g., the number of employees or the rented space of your company.
  • Supplier-Based Data, e.g. exact emissions directly coming from your suppliers.

Emission Factors:

To convert activity data into carbon emissions, we use emission factors. The Footprint Intelligence Platform contains a vast library of over 15,000 emission factors sourced from highly reputable, peer-reviewed studies and databases, for example Ecoinvent, Exiobase, and Defra. These factors are critical in providing an accurate conversion of your activity data into a carbon footprint figure.

Recognizing that every business is unique, our platform also allows the integration of your own emission factors. This is particularly useful when you have access to supplier- or product-specific emission factors, which can enhance the precision of your carbon emission calculations.

This method ensures that your carbon emissions are calculated with the utmost accuracy, helping you make informed decisions for your sustainability journey.
